What’s the Average Size of an En-suite Bathroom or Shower Room?

The average size of an en-suite bathroom or shower room is approximately 1200 mm wide x 2100 mm long. It’s also possible, with careful planning and design considerations, to make a functional en-suite in a much smaller space.

En-suite bathrooms and shower rooms don’t have specific regulatory dimension or sizing requirements. Whatever the size of your en-suite, there are several design considerations you’ll want to adhere to in order to create the perfect, aspirational and functional bathing space.

En-suite Shower Room Size & Dimensions

Traditionally speaking, en-suites usually consist of showers, and to make the most of a tight space you ideally want to be looking at installing an 800 x 700 shower enclosure or cubicle. This should be complemented by a compact, cloakroom, WC and basin. You’ll ideally want the sanitary ware fixtures to be wall-hung, which would open up the floor space, creating a more spacious feel.

In the design below, you could comfortably fit a 3-piece en-suite shower room in a space sized 800mm wide x 1900mm long. The door would open outward, and bathroom users would be greeted by the basin unit, which is usually the focal point of any bathroom. Even in a small space, an en-suite bathroom should always be aspirational as well as functional!

En-suite Wet Room Size & Dimensions

If you’re wanting to put a wet room, or wet floor shower, in your small en-suite, then the design and minimum sizing or dimension requirements will also need further consideration.

Due to the nature of a wet room, you’d need to move the door further away from the shower area to ensure no water escapes. This design does pose a problem though: the door would open outward showcasing the WC, which is not ideal from an access, privacy or aesthetics point of view.

The en-suite wet room is 800mm squared, so in order to provide enough functional space when the sanitary ware is in use, the remainder of the en-suite requires a minimum of 1200mm in length - even with the installation of a compact basin and WC, making it slightly bigger - and less desirable - than an en-suite with a shower enclosure.
