The average size of an en-suite bathroom is approximately 1200 mm wide x 2100 mm long. It’s also possible, with careful planning and design considerations, to make a functional en-suite in a much smaller space.
However, unlike habitual rooms, en-suite bathrooms and shower rooms don’t have specific, regulatory dimension or sizing requirements. There are also other considerations that should be adhered to if you’re wanting to create a bathing space that is aspirational and functional.
Traditionally speaking en-suites usually consist of showers, and to make the most of a tight space you ideally want to be looking at installing an 800 x 700 shower enclosure or cubicle. This should be complimented by a compact, cloakroom, WC and basin. Also, you ideally want the sanitary ware fixtures to be wall hung, which would open up the floor area, providing the illusion of more space.
In this particular scenario, as illustrated in the design below, you could comfortably fit a 3-piece en-suite shower room in a space sized 800 mm wide x 1900 mm long. With the door opening outward, and being greeted by the basin unit. The basin unit is usually the focal point to any bathroom. The minimum sized en-suite should always be both aspirational and functional.
If you’re wanting to put a wet room, or wet floor shower, in your small en-suite then the design and minimum sizing or dimension requirements will also need further consideration.
Due to the nature of a wet room you would need to move the door further away from the shower area to ensure no escaping water. The problem with this design however would mean that the door would open outward showcasing the WC, which is not ideal from an access, privacy or aesthetics point of view.
Due to the en-suite wet room size being 800 mm squared, and in order to provide enough functional space when the sanitary ware is in use, the remainder of the en-suite requires a minimum of 1200 mm in length, even with the installation of a compact basin and WC, making it slightly bigger, and less desirable than a en-suite with a shower enclosure.
